OLYMPIA – Washington Gov. Jay Inslee signed bills Wednesday banning single-use plastic bags and allowing sports betting.
Calling it “a victory for our environment,” the governor signed legislation prohibiting retailers from giving out single-use plastic carryout bags beginning Jan. 1, 2021. Retailers will be required to charge eight cents for other bags and that charge will increase to 12 cents in 2026.
The governor also signed a bill allowing sports gambling in Washington, but only at tribal casinos. The bill allows betting on professional and college sports, but not on college teams based in Washington.
“This will allow people to participate in a new gaming activity that is safe and well-regulated by the tribes, ″ Inslee said as he signed the bill.
