Forums on city hall are scheduled

HERMISTON, Oregon – Hermiston residents can explore the five options for repairing or replacing the fire-damaged city hall. Public forums will be held Tuesday. One forum is at 12:30 p.m. at the Harkenrider Center. The other is at 6 p.m. at the Hermiston Public Library.

The city has been pursuing possibilities for renovating or replacing city hall for four years. The options are to renovate and expand the current building, rebuild on the current site, sell the current city hall and renovate the Hermiston Community center; and sell the current city hall and rebuild on vacant land.

Assistant City Manager Mark Morgan says there are both strengths and drawbacks for each option, but one of those is not how much the selected option will cost.

“It’s only about a 10 percent difference in cost between any of those options,” Morgan said.

The Hermiston City Council will select an option this month.

“The council will be making a decision on Feb. 24,” Morgan said. “This is obviously not a decision that we want to leave hanging out there for months and months and months on end.”
