Bill would allow nurses to recommend medical marijuana

SALEM, Oregon – Nurse practitioners would be able to recommend medical marijuana as a treatment option under a bill before the 2020 Oregon Legislature.

Senate Bill 1561 gives nurse practitioners the ability to discuss medical marijuana as a treatment option, which they currently cannot do.

“Currently under the state Board of Nursing interpretation of current law these advanced precious nurses can’t even discuss medical marijuana as an option,” said Oregon Nurses Association Government Relations Director Deborah Riddick.

“I’m a proud advanced practiced registered nurse who loves working shoulder to shoulder with my physician colleagues and I just want to provide the best care my patients deserve,” said Representative Rachel Prusak (D- West Linn) who is a nurse practitioner.

The bill is up for possible committee action Wednesday.
