Arraignment set for alleged ax murderer

Colby James Hedman’s June 6, 2019 mugshot from Umatilla County Jail

WALLA WALLA, Washington – A Heppner man who allegedly killed a Walla Walla man last summer has been found competent to stand trial, according to Walla Walla County Prosecutor Jim Nagle. Colby James Hedman, 24, is charged in Walla Walla County with first-degree murder and theft of a motor vehicle following the death of Kyle Martz, 35, who worked as a Whitman College advisor, on July 7, 2019.

“We don’t know yet if the defense is going to seek a second opinion,” Nagle said.

Hedman is scheduled to be arraigned Monday, Jan. 27.

“I anticipate we may have to work on some more issues on that, so we don’t have a trial date set,” Nagle said.

According to court documents, Hedman confessed to killing Martz by hitting him with an ax multiple times. Hedman was arrested in Baker County and eventually waived extradition from Oregon to Washington.
