OLYMPIA, Washington – Washington legislators will be asked to put a fee on homeowners and auto insurance policies to raise money for fighting wildfires.
Commissioner of Public Lands Hilaary Franz is proposing a bill that would generate $63 million a year to fund programs that reduce wildfire danger.
“I know that if we fail to act now we are truly threatening the future of Washington state, our communities, our economy, our environment and our firefighters,” she said.
It would fund 42 full-time firefighters, fire trucks, a new firefighting helicopter and money for communities in the wildland-urban interface.
The Northwest Insurance Council said you’d pay the fee on all property and casualty policies.
