Nationwide strategic plan launched to reduce gun violence

WASHINGTON, District of Columbia – The Trump Administration announced a new gun violence initiative Wednesday called Project Guardian.  However, an Oregon group said it doesn’t go far enough.

In a written statement, U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon Billy J. Williams said he believes Project Guardian will save Oregon lives immediately.

Ceasefire Oregon’s Executive Director Penny Okamoto has concerns and said Project Guardian unfairly characterizes the mentally ill.

“We know that the vast majority of people who commit crimes are not mentally ill.  And, as a matter of fact, people who are mentally ill are far more likely victims of crime rather than commit a crime,” she said.

Okamoto said she would rather the federal government focus on safe gun storage and increased funding for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
