WALLA WALLA, Washington — Officers with the Walla Walla Police Department forced entry into a burning home on the 600 block of W. Poplar St. just at about 2:36 a.m. Thursday to escort one of the occupants outside.

According to Fire Chief Bob Yancey, a second occupant was still in the home in a back bedroom, but the heat and smoke were too intense for the officers to perform a rescue.

Firefighters performed a search of the residence and located the second occupant after about 15 minutes.  On-scene medics performed resuscitation efforts before transporting her to Providence St. Mary Medical Center.

The Walla Walla Fire Department was assisted by Walla Walla County Fire District No. 4 and the College Place Fire Department.  A total of 41 firefighters were on scene.

There were no injuries to firefighters or to the officers.  At this time, the cause of the fire is undetermined, but proven to started outside the residence in the backyard.
