WALLA WALLA, Washington – A woman was injured Tuesday morning while attempting to put a house fire out by herself.

The Walla Walla Fire Department was dispatched to 1015 Waverly Street at 11:08 a.m. to a residential structure fire.  Deputy Chief Brad Morris said the fire caused significant interior damage to the single-story residence and blew out the back picture window.

The female renter was not home at the time the fire started, but when she returned and saw the house was on fire, she attempted to put it out with a garden hose until firefighters arrived.  She sustained injuries and was transported to the local hospital.

Morris said the house in uninhabitable and that the Red Cross was contacted to assist the woman with temporary housing.

The cause of the fire is unknown, but it’s probable it was accidental.
