City council candidates prep for the primary

WALLA WALLA, Washington – As candidate filing week wrapped up last Friday, the August primary election is heating up. This year marks the first time council members in Walla Walla will be elected based on wards. Voters will elect candidates to represent the West and East wards, plus two-at-large members in this election

A total of seven candidates – four for the East Ward and three for the West Ward – are vying for a seat on the Walla Walla City Council.

The August primary election will determine the final two candidates for November’s General Election.

The candidates for City Council Position 4 – East Ward are James Powell, Derek R. Swain, G. (Ted) Koehler and Gayle Stevens.

The candidates for City Council Position 5 – West Ward are Sharon Kay Schiller, Barbara Zohner and Susan Smiley-Nakonieczny.

Incumbent Steve Moss has two challengers for the at-large Council Position 7.  His challengers are Jordan Michaels and Julian Saturno.

Councilman Tom Scribner is unchallenged for the at-large Council Position 6 seat.

Another race which drew a number of candidates is the race for the District 1 Port of Walla Walla Commission seat currently held by Peter Swant.  Swant is being challenged by Kip Kelly and Beth (Brotherton) Swanson.
