PORTLAND, Oregon – When officers from the Portland Police Department responded to an armed man on campus at Parkrose High School late this (Friday) morning, they learned the unnamed student had been tackled and disarmed by the school’s security guard, who also coaches football and track.

While police could not confirm the staff member’s identity, parents and students told multiple media outlets who it was. Keanon Lowe was a wide receiver for the Oregon Ducks. He’s now head football coach for Parkridge, having taken the team to the state playoffs in his first year. He was a redshirt as a freshman at UO in 2010, and played from 2011 to 2014. In addition to winning two Rose Bowls, he caught 68 passes for 891 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Students told Portland area reporters that the student in question was openly carrying the gun. It’s not clear if it is a rifle or a shotgun. Some students who knew the 18-year-old senior also speculated he might have wanted to commit suicide.

No shots were fired and no one was injured.
