HERMISTON, Oregon – Two men were charged last week in the June 2018 murder of Erik Navarrete of Hermiston. Police Chief Jason Edmiston said that his officers kept in close touch with the Navarrete family throughout the investigation and let them know when the arrests were imminent.
“Lt. (Randy) Studebaker and Det. (Victor) Gutierrez really wanted to explain everything to them so they were not surprised by any social media posts – ours or others,” Edmiston said.
Navarrete was shot in the head during an alleged attempted robbery on June 4, 2018. His family removed him from life support after donating his organs on June 8.
“From what I’m told, the family was grateful,” Edmiston said. “Obviously, they’re still dealing with the loss. Trying to be transparent with the family was critically important to us.”
He said that nothing will return Erik Navarrete to his family, but he hopes that the court case brings them a sense that justice was done. Edmiston said there could be one more arrest coming in the case. Vincent Wesley David Shermantine, 29, and David Edgar Sommerville, 19, were already in jail on outstanding warrants when the murder charges were filed against them.
