UPDATE: February makes us shiver

UPDATE: The National Weather Service has issued a new forecast for the area. Instead of being in the 20s, high temperatures will be at the freezing point, 32 degrees, or slightly higher throughout the period. This increases the chance that some of the precipitation that falls will be freezing rain or rain. Tomorrow will be the “warmest” day with a high of 37 degrees forecast. Low temperatures for the week will be in the low 20s with the exception of tonight, at 31 degrees and Tuesday at 29 degrees.

A winter storm warning has been issued for the region, and forecasters now say we could get six to eight inches before lighter snow moves in on Tuesday.

Snow and cold temperatures are not over yet. After a weekend of crashes, disabled vehicles and road closures, the National Weather Service says the snow is sticking around.

“We will continue to see these cold temperatures and some reinforcing cold air all the way out through at least the 20th,” National Weather Service Hydrologist Marilyn Lohmann said. “Additional systems will come in all the way through next weekend. So, yeah, very active weather pattern here for at least the next 10 days.”

Blizzard conditions forced the closure of Interstate 82 from south of Pasco to the Oregon border Saturday through Sunday afternoon. A portion of Interstate 90 was also closed.

Today snow could mix with freezing rain towards afternoon and all the way into Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. Today’s high is predicted to be 32 degrees Forecasters expect little or no ice accumulation. New snow accumulations of one to three inches are expected during the date today and again tonight. Less than an inch of snow is expected both Tuesday and Tuesday night, and one to two inches of snow are possible Wednesday.

As the week progresses, a chance of snow continues, and temperatures will turn colder with high temperatures in the 20s and lows in the teens at least through Sunday. A chance of snow remains in the forecast through Sunday. The only exception is during the day on Thursday, when the forecasters only expect mostly cloudy skies.
