Monthly recycling surcharge reduced in Walla Walla

WALLA WALLA, Washington – Starting in January, residents should have noticed quite a deduction in the recycling surcharge on their utility bills.

In 2018, the city was charging $3.30 a month and now, in 2019, the monthly recycling surcharge is $1.21 a month.

“The rate in 2018, since we were playing a bit of catch up, was compressed,” said Walla Walla Public Works Director Ki Bealey.

He explains that with the compressed costs in 2018, the city had to cover the costs of recycling over a 5 month period.

Now, in 2019, the city will be spreading the cost of recycling over a 12 month period which results in the reduced monthly recycling surcharge.
