Area sports stars are scholarly too

WILSONVILLE, Oregon – The Pendleton High School football team is first in the 5A division in academics. The Buckaroos came in first with a combined 3.41 grade point average, according to the Oregon School Activities Association.

“They’re good students first and they are also an extremely good football team,” Superintendent Chris Fritsch said of the Buckaroos.

So is the 4A football team comprised of students form McLoughlin High School in Milton-Freewater and Griswold High School in Helix. They topped the competition with a GPA of 3.32.

Another team that shows stellar academics is Irrigon High School’s volleyball team in the 3A. Their combined GPA is 3.91.

Other area teams also made the top scholar list. In 3A football, Umatilla High School is fifth with a 3.33 GPA. In 1A, Pilot Rock/.Nixyaawii is sixth with a 3.15 GPA.

In 5A volleyball, Pendleton is sixth with a GPA of 3.75. The Mac-Hi team in 4A ties for eighth  at 3.68 with Henley.  After first-place Irrigon in 3A volleyball, Umatilla is 20th with a 3.44 GPA, and Riverside High School is 27th with 3.26. Weston McEwen is seventh in 2A volleyball with a GPA OF 3.64. Pilot Rock at 3.37 and Stanfield at 3.20 are further down that list. In 1A volleyball, Condon/Wheeler is tied for third with a 3.80 GPA. Also making the 1A list are Ione with 3.47 and Griswold with 3.31.

5A boys’ soccer sees Pendleton ranked 14th with a 3.10 GPA. Riverside and Umatilla are also listed for 3A/2A/1A combined with GPA’s of 3.17 and 3.04 respectively.

For the girls’ soccer teams, Pendleton is 10th with a GPA of 3.64 in 5A. Umatilla made the 3A/2A/1A list with a 3.4 GPA and Riverside sported a 3.16 GPA.

In 5A boys’ cross country, Pendleton had a 3.35 GPA, with several teams on top including Churchill with a 3.99 GPA in the first slot. On the 2A/1A list, Griswold was 10th with a GPA of 3.36. Heppner Ione’s GPA was 3.02.

In girls’ cross country, the Pendleton team is at the bottom of the list with a 3.28 GPA. At the top was the Churchill girls with the same GPA as their boys team at 3.99. Heppner/Ione was 10th in the 3A/2A/!A with a 3.73 GPA. Griswold was 14th at 3.44, and Stanfield/Echo girls cross country was 17th with 3.36.
