WALLA WALLA, Washington – Walla Walla’s Parks and Recreation Director Andy Coleman says he’s happy with the department’s 2019-2020 budget following recent approval by city council. City council approved the city’s budget at the most recent council meeting.
According to Coleman, the department has several items on its 2019-20 calendars, starting with putting a new roof on the “pro shop” at Veterans Memorial Golf Course.
“That facility is in good shape, but the roof is leaking and has been for a couple years,” he said. “It’s time to repair that roof. So that’s a big ticket item which we’re glad to get done to preserve that building.”
The budget will also allow travel and training for parks and recreation staff. Coleman adds that during the recession, travel and training throughout the city was reduced to nearly nothing, and the restored funding will be helpful to staff.
According to Coleman, additional funds have also been allocated in the new budget for playground maintenance and repair.
“When a slide fails, sometimes that can be $3,000 to $6,000, so we’ll have funds in our budget if something does fail to be able to replace it without having to go back to the city manager and say this slide failed unexpectedly, what do you want us to do,” he said. “So we’ll have money in our budget … plus a plan to replace items on a schedule, rather than just waiting for things to fail which isn’t a very good approach.”
