WALLA WALLA, Washington — City council did not vote on the ordinance to ban smoking and vaping in city parks at their regular meeting on Wednesday.
Instead, says Parks and Rec Director Andy Coleman, they voted, 4-3, to send it back to the Parks, Recreation and Urban Forestry Advisory Board to consider creating smoking zones rather than an outright ban.
“There was a surprising amount of discussion about this,” says Mayor Barbara Clark. “Some council members were a little concerned about whether this was more taking care of people and shepherding people than is really necessary. That was kind of the tension in that.”
The ban was proposed as a solution to stopping children and park visitors from being exposed to secondhand smoke.
