WESTON, Oregon – East Umatilla County Rural Fire District and Helix Volunteer Fire were called out to an active wheat field fire this afternoon at 1:36 at 53074 Kirk Road. EUCRFD Chief Dave Baty called for mutual aid from any units nearby when the wind shifted and threatened structures on State Street.

Both sides of the street were placed on a Level 3 (Go Now) evacuation notice. A Level 2 (Get Ready) notice were placed within a two-mile radius of State Street. With the containment of the blaze, all evacuation levels have been lifted.

During the fire, two medic units were staged on Main Street for any residents needing assistance. Four people were treated for various problems, but none required transport. The fire burned 62 acres and the cause of the blaze is under investigation.

“I am eternally grateful from everyone who came out to help,” Baty said. “This fire had the potential to destroy several homes and didn’t because of all the units that responded.”

There were a total of 17 fire units on the scene, along with personnel from Umatilla County Emergency Management Office, Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office, Umatilla County Search and Rescue and several medical units.
