Council to deliberate proposed smoking ban in city parks

WALLA WALLA, Washington — Smoking in Walla Walla’s parks could soon become against city regulation. City council will review a proposal at their meeting Wednesday at 7 p.m. that would ban all smoking, including tobacco, e-cigarettes, marijuana and vaping, in all city parks. The proposal doesn’t include a smoking ban on the grounds of the Veterans Memorial Golf Course, which is also considered a city park.

Parks and Recreation Director Andy Coleman says it’s been a real problem in places such as the Veterans Memorial Pool. People will smoke near the facility, and Coleman says the second-hand smoke will drift into the pool area.

A survey conducted by the local tobacco prevention program indicated that the majority of people would support such a ban.

They are skipping work sessions and getting right to business. Coleman says it’s crucial to get the matter before council as soon as possible, because we are well into the summer months — and there is currently a high volume of park visitors.
