WALLA WALLA, Washington — A fire at Borleske Stadium on E. Rees Ave in Walla Walla Monday evening at about 5:40 p.m. will not affect the Sweets’ opening day, according to baseball officials.

There was a structural fire in the grandstand and in the bowels underneath the seating bowl. Fire officials say crews made entry and extinguished the fire “quickly and without any difficulty”.

There is no cause determined for the fire, as there was no operating equipment in the room. Asphalt was being applied to the ground surface outside of the grandstands and next to this area, and operations had concluded approximately 15 minutes prior. No link between the fire and the asphalt application has been found.

Damage to the property and contents is estimated at $8,000.

Both the Walla Walla Fire Department and Walla Walla County Fire District No. 4 responded to the scene. There were no injuries to firefighters or bystanders.
