WALLA WALLA, Washington — A transformer arced in the basement of Baker Boyer Bank on Monday afternoon, leading to a smoke investigation and a road closure in front of the bank on Monday afternoon at about 4:44 p.m. Pacific Power and Light officials shut power down to the area during the investigation, leaving several blocks downtown in the dark, and turning the traffic lights off at three Main Street intersections.

It was possibly caused by an issue with an underground power vault in the alley.

“Smoke was discovered in the basement of Baker Boyer Bank and was ventilated by our crews,” Morris says. “The building was evacuated with no injuries.”

Doyle Electric also responded and worked with Pacific Power and Light to restore the power.

Fire officials left the scene at around 6:51 p.m., and power was restored overnight.
