Police catch coin thief

COLLEGE PLACE, Washington — A College Place coin thief was arrested this morning after attempting to steal change from a local car wash.

Early this morning, College Place police officers responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle parked at the Classy Chassy car on SW 9th St. A black SUV was parked close to the car wash vacuum as officers arrived. Upon approaching the vehicle, they found Tracy Manis, 55, of Dayton crouched between the drivers door and the vacuum. Officers asked him what he was doing, and simultaneously realized that the coin storage was ripped out of the vacuum machine.

“Officers observed the coin storage was damaged and coins were lying upon the ground leading to his open door and piled up within the driver’s middle console box,” the department said in a release. “Officers also observed the tools used to pry open the coin box lying within the suspects’ vehicle.”

Manis was arrested and booked into the Walla Walla Corrections facility for second degree malicious mischief and third degree theft.
