Capt. Bill Fugate via Oregon Legislature

BEND, Oregon – The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office has begun a criminal investigation into an anonymous complaint received Monday night involving Oregon State Police Capt. Bill Fugate, who serves as the state police’s public information officer. The sheriff’s office would not supply any information about the specific nature of the complaint.

“We are in the early stages of the investigation and will not be releasing any specific information at this time about the nature of the investigation,” Sheriff L. Shane Nelson said. “The investigation is not related to his employment or on-duty conduct.”

Fugate has been an OSP employee for an estimated 11 years.

“I placed Capt. Fugate on administrative leave once I learned of the criminal investigation initiated by the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office,” OSP Superintendent Travis Hampton said. “The Oregon State Police is grateful for the immediate and professional response by the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office to allegations involving our employee. OSP has the utmost confidence in Sheriff Nelson and his investigators to conduct a comprehensive and transparent investigation.”
