PENDLETON, Oregon — The FBI has released its 2016 crime statistics to communities. Pendleton Police Chief Stuart Roberts says even though the numbers are a year old by the time they are released, there is still much to be learned from what the statistics show — like an increase in violent crimes coupled with a big drop in the number of property crimes.
“The value in that is you really look for those spikes in activity and try to do some analysis of what are the contributing factors,” said Roberts. “Are there things that we can do that deter those types of activities?”
Though the department has only grown by one officer since 1968, calls for service have grown, gaining six percent in 2016. That cuts into officer-initiated activity, creating a 10 percent drop.
