The change came after Silvia Lesamo-Santos, 46, was denied a transplant. Her son, Ivan Garcia says they were devastated.
“Honestly heartbroken,” said her son Ivan Garcia. “Heartbroken that a hospital, even if they are going to get their money’s worth or whatever it’s gonna be, they still decide to say no because she’s just not a citizen.”
The ACLU started a petition to get the hospital to change its policy. OHSU said once they were made aware the hospital had such a policy, the immediately terminated it — clearing the way for the patient to be placed on the transplant waiting list.
