UMATILLA, Oregon – U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry visited McNary Dam this evening as part of a two-day tour of the region. He said his goal is to understand all of the elements of his job.
“This is a fascinating part of America’s story about the taming of some wild rivers back 60 years plus ago,” he said.
Perry said that part of his visit is to learn about how hydro power is a vital element of the nation’s energy system. His host, U.S. Rep. Greg Walden (R-Hood River) agrees with Perry that McNary is a great place to learn that lesson.
“Hydro is the cornerstone of our energy package,” Walden said. “We are looking at the entire Columbia and Snake river systems and the treaty with Canada and what our stance should be going forward to get a better deal.”
Tomorrow, Perry will visit the Pacific Northwest National Laboratories in Richland, Washington, and the Hanford Nuclear Reservation.
