Pole fire forces road closure

PILOT ROCK, Oregon – A power pole fire in Pilot Rock caused some anxious moments for emergency responders Monday morning. The fire forced crews to close Highway 395 in downtown Pilot Rock briefly.

A local fire official said that Pacific Power prefers to extinguish pole fires itself because of the electricity, so crews were basically doing traffic control and waiting for the utility to arrive. Before that happened, one of the higher lines on the pole swung down and missed hitting  a transformer by mere inches.

The official said if the pole was any threat to other structures or public safety, firefighters would have stopped their passive role and put it out themselves. Shortly after that near miss, Pacific Power crews arrived.

It’s believed the blaze was sparked by rain soaking the wooden pole and the winds causing sparks.
